Which services still use the bleep test?

Training for the wrong test is the most common mistake. The bleep test is still widely used, but several services have moved to other assessments. Here's the honest state of it.

Still use the bleep test

Police (England & Wales), 15m shuttle to 5.4, for recruitment and the annual test. Fire & rescue, many services, commonly 20m to 8.8. Armed forces officer selection (RAF, Army, Royal Marines), 20m MSFT. Football and rugby, often the Yo-Yo IR test. Schools, GCSE PE and general fitness testing.

Have moved to something else

British Army soldier entry, replaced the bleep test with a 2km run in November 2025 (officers still run the MSFT). Police Scotland, moved to an outdoor circuit assessment in 2023. An Garda Síochána (Ireland), dropped the shuttle test. Royal Navy ratings , a 2.4km treadmill run.

The rule of thumb: confirm the current test on your recruiter's own page before you train. Standards change, and a chart from two years ago can send you to the wrong test.
